Galen’s Annual New Years Ride – 2012

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

It was a cold Saturday morning when 13 of us gathered in front of Galen’s house.  I could not help but notice the strange looks Galen’s neighbors were giving us.  They had this look on their face like… hey do not you guys know that it is winter and that it is cold outside and that there is snow on the ground…. who rides bicycles in weather like this?

Well the answer is, IC3.  Thanks to Galen and his family for hosting what is becoming a annual event, Galen’s New Years Ride.

Before leaving for a ride down the Cherry Creek bike path Galen lead the group in a prayer.  Galen then let the group put in prayer requests.

We had a great ride down the trail.  We did a short loop out to Cheery Creek Reservoir before heading down to REI.  We picked-up a rider as we headed back from Village Green park.  I have forgot his name but I knew him from the Bicycle Village Aurora rides.  I was amazed at how many other riders were out on the trail.  Denver definitely has some hard core bicycle riders.

We stopped at REI and had some hot drinks and food before heading out.  At REI we ran in to the Bicycle Village ride who was also having their first ride of the new year.  On the way back we did a short loop around the Sport Authority Stadium.  Josh Taylor took a photo of the group in front of the stadium.  See the photo below, Rich Sweeny is the one “Tebowing”.

We arrived back at Galen’s house about 12:15 – 12:30 where Carol (Galen’s wife) had a GREAT lunch ready for everybody.

All in all it was a great morning for a ride, fellowship and food.

Oct. 1st Bicycle Village Aurora Ride & Lunch

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

Greetings All,

Join us this Saturday is our ride out of Bicycle Village in Aurora.  All are welcome.  Bicycle Village is our local shop sponsor and has graciously offered to provide lunch after our ride.  If you’re planning on coming out, you MUST RSVP with me so we can have a enough food for all.  Bicycle Village host 3 rides every Saturday (social, intermediate, and advanced ride), so we’ll join their groups in order to keep things simple.  Their social ride is like our EZ ride group, intermediate is more recreational, and the advance group tends to ride fast with less stopping.  As you can see there’s something for everyone.

Please RSVP with me by Thursday 9/29 so BV can plan accordingly with food.   BV sends out their ride details late in the week (Thursday or Friday morning) so I’ll send those joining us the details of the rides later in the week.

Meet at 9:00  Bicycle Village Aurora  2802 South Havana St., Aurora, CO 80014

IC3 EZ Ride – Dawson Ranch Butte Trail

Wednesday, September 7th, 2011
Dawson’s Butte Trail is a single track experience. You will need a mountain bike or a hybrid bike as this is a dirt trail. I would encourage you to try this trail as it is a fun easy ride.
Description: It’s a simpleloop from the parking lot. The singletrack is usually wide, non threatening, and passes through a mix of ponderosa forest and open meadows. The loop is just over 5 miles with about 300 feet of elevation change, so the grade is always gradual. This is a dirt trail so you will need a mountain bike or a hybrid bike. A great trail for easy single track riding. For those that are interested, we will ride the loop twice. Once going counter clockwise and once going clockwise.  It’s almost like riding two different trails, plus it gives you a 10 mile ride. It takes about 45 minutes to complete the five mile loop.
Directions: From Denver/Castle Rock–head south on I-25 to the Plum Creek Exit–exit to the rightand turn south on the frontage road. Go 5 miles to Tomah road and take a right. It’s another 1.5 miles to the Dawson Butte Ranch entrance, also on the right. Parking lot for cars and horse trailers is on the left.

Buffalo Creek Road EZ Ride

Thursday, July 14th, 2011

The ride this weekend is the shortest ride of our season but probably the most unique. It’s about 10 miles round trip. An easy climb for about 5 miles on a dirt road and then an easy downhill for 5 miles…..how about that???  We will be in the mountains on a dirt road so you  will need a mountain bike or a hybrid bike. Road bike tires would not work  well for this ride. And then to continue the uniqueness of the ride there is lunch at the Bucksnort Salon in Sphinx Park. See below for details.

July 16 – IC3 EZ Ride – Buffalo Creek Road – Buffalo Creek, Co

Date: July 16 – Saturday
Time: 9 AM – Noon
Host: International Christian Cycling Club
Cost: No cost
Location: Near Pine Colorado

Carpooling: If you would like to carpool/caravan, meet at the RTD parking lot on the SW corner of Hampden and Wadsworth at 8 AM

Directions: To reach the trail head take C470 to Highway 285 heading west. Travel about 20 miles west on 285 to Pine Junction. At the traffic light, turn left and head south
on a very winding and curvy Pine Valley Road. It is about 6 miles to Pine. Continue through Pine for another 3 miles to Buffalo Creek. Turn right on Buffalo Creek Road and
park in the parking lot on the left. There is a $5 charge per car.

After the ride, I would recommend a buck burger at the Bucksnort Saloon in Sphinx Park. From Buffalo Creek, drive back to Pine and turn north at 4th street (Library), go one
block and turn right onto CO Rd 83 (a dirt road) and go about one mile on a narrow winding road to the Bucksnort Saloon.
