2012 National Cyclocross Championship: Report

POSTED BY JLIBERLES ON 1/06/12 • CATEGORIZED AS 2012 CYCLOCROSS NATIONALS,RACE REPORTS

VERONA, WISCONSIN — When you’ve been racing for five years and you’re in the 13-14 race, odds are good that you’re serious about what you do. That’s certainly the case for three-time National Champion Gage Hecht (International Christian Cycling Club), who took the holeshot in what was arguably the fastest start of the day. The 13-14 year old juniors charged down the pavement en masse, and strung out almost as quickly as they hit the slick, greasy course. By the 180 degree turn, riders were strung out and the leaders, Hecht and Spencer Petrov (Lionhearts) as the two standouts on the front.

One lap in, Hecht had created a gap of 15 bike lengths between himself and Petrov, and their gap on the rest of the field had grown to 10 seconds. Behind them in third was Cameron Beard, and five seconds behind him saw Sean McElroy (Team Specialized Racing) and Michael Owens.

The crowds had grown since earlier in the morning, and the friends and families of the racers were out in force, cheering on their hometown favorites. The course has been getting slicker and muddier as the day has progressed, and riders were spending more time tripoding to stay upright in the sharp corners. The cloud coverage caused temperatures to drop slightly, and racers finished looking spent and chilly, though for Hecht, nothing could wipe the smile off of his face.

“I’m really happy with the race,” he told Cyclocross Magazine. “It went great and I did everything I felt like I needed to.”

Oct. 1st Bicycle Village Aurora Ride & Lunch

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

Greetings All,

Join us this Saturday is our ride out of Bicycle Village in Aurora.  All are welcome.  Bicycle Village is our local shop sponsor and has graciously offered to provide lunch after our ride.  If you’re planning on coming out, you MUST RSVP with me so we can have a enough food for all.  Bicycle Village host 3 rides every Saturday (social, intermediate, and advanced ride), so we’ll join their groups in order to keep things simple.  Their social ride is like our EZ ride group, intermediate is more recreational, and the advance group tends to ride fast with less stopping.  As you can see there’s something for everyone.

Please RSVP with me by Thursday 9/29 so BV can plan accordingly with food.   BV sends out their ride details late in the week (Thursday or Friday morning) so I’ll send those joining us the details of the rides later in the week.

Meet at 9:00  Bicycle Village Aurora  2802 South Havana St., Aurora, CO 80014

Blessings,

“IC3 Night” at the Table Mountain Race Series

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

Thursday August 11th will be “IC3 Night” at the Table Mountain Race Series.  If you can come
out and race on the evening of Thursday August 11th please do so.  The goal for this date and this
event is to have a strong IC3 presence.  Have as many IC3ers as possible be at the event and racing.

These races take place on the old Wheels of Thunder course (the Colorado State Patrol Training Facility) and are an absolute blast.  The 6pm Thursday race is about the speed of a slower CAT 4 race.  It would be great fun to race together and we could dominate the race.  The races on this course are safe.  The 13-14 juniors are able to enter the same race as the adults, thus everyone can race together (parents and juniors in the same race along with all other IC3ers).  It would be excellent to have everyone together for racing and fellowship.

Flyer for event -> http://www.americancycling.org/sites/default/files/Site_Files/Race_Flyers/2011/2011Table%20Mtn%20FlyerFinal.pdf

From Erik Judson

The race starts around 6:00PM give or take 15 minutes, and you can’t really start
to warm up on the course until close to 6:00PM.  The best thing would be to bring a trainer and come around 5:15PM.  Sign up starts around 5:30PM or so, and it’s only $17 with an ACA license, can’t beat that!

It would be great to have as many IC3 folks show up as possible, for His glory and have a very strong presence in the race, and for racing fellowship.  13-14 Juniors could hang in the pack too…

January 22, 2011 IC3 Adult Race Team Meeting

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

Rich welcomed everyone and began with a prayer.
Rich introduced Bruce Douglas from Bicycle Village.

I. Doug bean by introducing everyone:
a. He told everyone the owners name of the Aurora Bicycle Village is CB. Bruce said he has more knowledge than ever in Denver metro area no one has more knowledge about cycling.
b. Dave Thompson is Bruce’s right hand man for sponsorships. New for Bicycle Village this year they are starting a liaison to enhance the club/store member relationship. As a Club member this is who you can contact or go to with a problem or a specific need. Dave Thompson is that man.
c. He told us Joe Labelle the Store Manager feel free to call you to ask questions that you have or need help with anything especially if you need service done quickly.
d. Very difficult for Dave and Bruce to circle back once the season has started, but they want to make sure everyone is being taken care of. Please let them know if you need anything.

II. History of Bicycle Village:
a. Bicycle Village was a family operation and was bought by the Gart family. They are two great entrepreneurs and businessman and they went into business with Vail Resorts several years ago. This last April the buyout was completed and now Vail Resorts or Specialty sports owns them. They have a lot of businesses under different names across the state.

III. Weekend Rides:
a. Bicycle Village (BV) has Saturday rides all year long and the goal is to have the first 100 person ride coming out of this store. Typically there are three different levels of rides. Chris Brown is the overall ride leader.

IV. The advantages of Bicycle Village being our Club Sponsor:
a. BV advantage- lifetime tunes.
b. Nick the head of the pro-shop knows everything about high end equipment.
c. Jerry is the fitter and very well-known across the state and one program he uses is Motion Caption Software and Challenge?

V. Regarding the sponsorship:
a. They are still getting all the details finalized with corporate.
b. Bruce mentioned they are looking for a bike brand to associate with IC3. He mentioned Trek is a very good company they are very fiscally responsible they are best in class in most of their categories.
c. Bruce said he is not in the business of trashing other brands they had Specialized in here for many years, they don’t like that they had close-outs on the floor.
d. Bruce is thrilled to have IC3 with us and proceeding that the agreement is signed and sealed.
e. Everyone will get a “Premium Partner Card” that has the Club name on it and they can use it at every store.

VI. Here are the discounts the team is offered:
a. 10% off one bike per year off the floor.
b. 20% off anytime on accessories
c. 25% off any labor, fit or service

VII. Rich questioned them on how fast they can do repairs. They said their policy is same day service. In by 10 out by 5. If you tell them that you need to race tomorrow they should fix it while you wait.
VIII. Rich Introduced the Board Member- Al Medina and he spoke about Alexi Greywall being part of our team.
a. Sunday January 30th he will be at Cherry Hills church and meet people between services. Al asked for other ideas to get him involved in short term mission trips.
b. Some of the upcoming races Alexi is going to get involved in is:
• Valley of the Sun in Arizona in February
• Missed what the other race was that he suggested.
c. They mentioned he likes to do longer stage races.

IX. Sean West is the treasurer and he was introduced by Gaylen.

X. Rich talked about the clothing order and apologized for not having any sample clothing to show. He mentioned the bad news on clothing is they are not going to see any for awhile. The plan is that they are going to take the old kit and it’s going to look more like the National kit. Our local kit has to be more in line with the National kit. A lot of the logo’s will change and have the local sponsors on it. If they are lucky they will be ordering in 4 weeks and team members will have in three weeks after.

a. Sean said they like to use Pactimo to turn orders around quickly and the quality.
b. Several team members mentioned they liked Voier shorts (or Volet) a lot better. That they did not like the Pactimo shorts because they were saggy.
c. Sean mentioned if there is someone willing to do the work they could maybe change brands.
d. Dave Chart commented on his jacket- that they were very willing to repair it.
e. It was reminded if you are taking sponsorship you have to wear the local kit in races.
f. The National clothing order is due January 26th.
g. Rich mentioned he would like to see a mid-summer order added or have some inventory in case someone tears their kit in a crash or some other kind of mishap.

XI. Wheels of Thunder:
a. Planning is under way and is scheduled for May 7th.
b. There is a big change you have to hire the ACA’s timing company. They are going to do the chip timing. When you buy the ACA license and the chips at the same time. The chip is supposed to be good for 4-5 years.
c. The location is still the same, but we are not sure how many more years they will let them have it there.
d. This year they want to promote the “dash for cash.” Last year for the 1-2 Pro’s WOT gave away a $100 every other lap. It is a very cash rich race. Rich is hoping promoting that it will bring more racers to the race.
e. Last year they had 373 racers and barely broke even. Rich has set a goal this year for 500 racers.
f. Rich asked for volunteers to help out. The biggest day they need help is for the day of the race.

XII. On the Cross Cyclocross race:
a. Gaylen Classen is they Cyclocross director.
b. He asked if everyone would be okay if they had the race on a Sunday. After much conversation the members do not think the race should be held on a Sunday.
c. Gaylen asked for other locations to be suggested then because Sunday is the best day to have the race at the High School where it was held last year.
1. Sierra Middle School in Parker, Colorado was suggested as a possible location.
d. Gaylen mentioned a consideration in the location is how far away the race is from Boulder. The sports arena in Boulder is booked up on all Saturdays due to Football.

XIII. Rich now opened the discussion about the race funds. The budget for the year is $3,000 for road and $1000 for Cyclocross. Rich asked for feedback from the members about the race funds.
a. Dave Chart mentioned he used the racers assistance program and it has worked out great for him.
b. Rich reviewed the details of the Racers Assistance Program- you must sign a commitment to race in 15 races and you will receive (1) one kit.
c. Additional feedback was the assistance program allowed for racers to be able to compete in more races.
d. Rich stated last year they spent $988.00 on kits last year for racers assistance.
e. Rich then mentioned we have Alexi and Gage and that IC3 will pay the entry fee for all their ACA races. If Gage is racing the 4’s or 3’s we will reimburse entry fees.
f. Sean suggested we better put a cap onhow much money we are going to give out to Gage and Alexi.
g. Gage’s Dad Bruce Hecht mentioned that he felt as a team coming together that any winnings should be redistributed back into the team.
1. There was much discussion after the comment of; if you are in the racers assistance program that you should give back any winnings.
2. It was then suggested if you win you give back half to the team.
3. No final decision was made on this topic.

XIV. Fund Raising:
a. There was discussion about having some fund raising events to help support the team.
b. Al said that in order to be the type of team they want to be they need to raise a lot of money.

XV. Team Targeted Races:
a. It was suggested that the team select a few races that everyone attends to show a large IC3 presence.
b. Rich is going to send out an email to everyone requesting they send in the races they would like to target to attend as a strong group.

XVI. Team Targeted Practices:
a. Several members mentioned they would like to have team practices where they would focus on training as a team and working as a team.
b. They suggested they would prefer this more than just a random Saturday or Sunday ride.

Meeting Adjourned at 4:00pm.
